Why do I keep buying batteries I already own?

Because a battery is almost never bought against a drawer — it's bought against a remote that died mid-episode, a smoke detector chirping at two in the morning, or a toy that stopped working five minutes after unwrapping. Each purchase feels forced by the one device in your hand, never like it's adding to a pile, even while a tin or a drawer at home already holds a dozen loose batteries that would have done the same job.

A battery solves this device's silence, not the tin's stock

The moment you reach for a fresh pack is rarely a calm one. The remote has gone dead in the middle of something, the detector won't stop chirping, or a child is holding a toy that no longer lights up. The question in your head is "will this make the noise stop," not "how many AAs do I already have." Nothing about that moment resembles opening a kitchen drawer and counting — it resembles solving an immediate annoyance with whatever is nearest, which is the checkout aisle you're already standing in, not a tin you'd have to go home and search.

The three ways it actually happens

The multi-pack creates a stash you then forget about. You buy a pack of twenty because it's cheaper per battery, use four for the remote, and drop the rest in a drawer. Six months later a toy dies, and you don't picture "I have sixteen of these somewhere" — you picture the empty shelf at the shop on the way home. The bulk buy was meant to solve this exact problem, and it still doesn't, because owning sixteen batteries is not the same as remembering you own them.

They scatter into the devices that hold them, not into one place. A working battery doesn't sit in a drawer waiting to be counted — it's already inside a remote, a flashlight, a wall clock, a bathroom scale, a smoke detector. Each of those is a small, separate pocket of stock that never gets tallied together, so "how many batteries do I own" is really "how many devices in my house currently have some inside," which is a question almost nobody can answer from memory.

Sizes and types look close enough to grab without checking. AA and AAA sit a few millimetres apart and blur together in a cluttered drawer. Alkaline and rechargeable cells of the same size look nearly identical but behave differently, and a half-used cell looks exactly like a fresh one until it's already failed in the device. Grabbing "one that looks about right" quietly replaces actually verifying it's the one you need.

Why "I'd notice a tin full of batteries" doesn't hold up

Batteries are some of the most visually uniform objects in a house. A dozen AAs in a tin look like a dozen AAs, whether they were bought last month or three years ago, whether they're full or nearly spent. There is no way to tell charge level by looking, no wear pattern the way a worn shoe shows its age, and no size difference between a battery with plenty of life left and one about to fail. You'd notice a shelf with twelve of the same mug on it instantly. A tin with twelve batteries in it just looks like a tin of batteries.

What actually helps, without cataloguing every cell in the house

You don't need to log each battery individually. What closes the gap is a rough sense of what's already in the house, by size — a dozen or so AA, a handful of AAA, one 9V for the detector — so the next pack you're about to buy at the till gets weighed against something instead of against nothing. That one rough line is often enough to turn "I'd better grab a pack just in case" into "there's a stash of these in the kitchen drawer already."

The other half is simply having somewhere to check in the few seconds before the purchase happens. Almost nobody pictures their own drawer while standing at a checkout with a chirping smoke detector in mind — there's nothing in that moment that prompts it. A habit of glancing at a short list first catches far more of this than trying to recall a scattered stash from memory ever will.

Where a short list beats a better memory

This is one of the cases where looking something up matters more than trying to recall it, because the problem was never carelessness — it was that nothing tells you, standing at a till with a dead remote in mind, what's already sitting in a tin at home or inside half the gadgets in the house.
